Porcelain Tile Care & Maintenance

Porcelain tile is naturally durable and easy to maintain.  With daily attention and occasional special cleaning, you can maintain the beauty of your porcelain tile’s surface for years to come.

Floor Tileoor Tile

General maintenance tips:

  • Frequently sweep, vacuum or mop the entire floor.
  • Gently remove any stuck-on debris with a putty knife or nylon scouring pad.
  • Damp-mop with a solution of household cleaner and water, rinse with clean water and allow to dry (or wipe dry to avoid water spots).
  • Do not use wax, oil-based or abrasive cleansers.
  • Do not use sealers on tile body (sealer is recommended for non-epoxy grout).
  • Do not use scrubbing pads containing steel or metal.

Special cleaning tips:

  • Pay attention to grout lines, as they are porous and may hold stains.  Consider freshening your grout sealer twice annually, unless you used an epoxy grout, which does not require sealer.  Do not use ammonia, as it will discolor grout.
  • For intensive cleaning, use a commercial tile cleaner or other non oil-based cleaner.  Let the cleaner stand as needed to loosen dirt and follow up with scrubbing and rinsing

Wall & Countertop Tile

General maintenance tips:

  • Do not use abrasive cleaners on wall or countertop tile.
  • Wipe down wall and counters with a sponge and tile cleaner.  Window cleaner is good for tile with glossy finish.
  • In the bath, hard water stains can be removed with a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water.  A spray-on daily shower cleaner washes away soap scum and is effective for regular cleaning.
  • In the kitchen, consistently wipe tile surfaces with a clean, damp sponge and a mild household cleaner.
  • Tend to stains immediately, using a nylon-bristle brush or nylon scouring pad
